So I suppose I should preface this with, "I started a blog." So... I started a blog.
Did anyone else think that high school or college was going to be a giant episode of Grease? I couldn't help but think that the Pink Laddies would be sitting in the corner of the lunch room while guys drag race in abandon canals...However upon entering the place most call hell, I was quite surprised at the lack of choreographed dance numbers. Luckily, I was in theatre so I sang all the reprises of "Summer Lovin'," I could stand, but I found a majority of the population found solace in other activities entirely. I went to a fairly large suburban high school that was much the same as any. Sure people did drugs ( ok they did a lot) and sure people fought ( ok they did that a lot too) and sure, some may have even gotten a little friendly holding hands and then a little dirty down in the sand ( ok they did a lot...no like really, how is a bathroom stall appealing?). Yet, if there is one thing I learned from high school, it's that people are mean. Fortunately I was never subjected to bullying or teasing but I saw many that were. I think somewhere in the recesses of history someone decided high school was the be all end all. I'm here to say: It's not. Of course I had some awesome times in high school but I never bought into the idea that those four fast years were supposed to be the best of my life. I think that's why people fight for status so much. If you put people down, then maybe you'll become something greater the guy sitting next to you. Fact of the matter is that no one wants to be inconsequential, so many decide to matter at the expense of others. I hate using the word "bullying," because it conveys some stupid 90's PSA, yet I find that no matter what I call it, it still happens.
Another thing I learned in high school is that people are incredible. I don't think incredible is really a strong enough word to describe some of the students I met within my school's walls. Even in the midst of some crazy drug use and mud slinging, some still found a way to be brilliant. Some of the people I call my best friends are amongst this small group. In high school, we all begin begin to discover ourselves (there's the 90's PSA) and become passionate. The amount of love and disdain I felt in the classroom is a contradiction I don't think I'll ever understand. The human race is capable of such extraordinary acts of selflessness and, unfortunately, malevolence.
Yeah high school is confusing time, but don't fret, it gets better. Four years that seem to mean everything at the time, will soon prove four years that taught you a little more about... well...you. I don't think any one can ever prepare you for the lessons and people you'll encounter in life. Time flies, whether you're having fun or not, and some times, we're all just left scratching our heads and saying WhatTheBilly?
